Daily Nutrition Tips for Cats

Thoughtful feeding, from playful kittenhood to the quieter years

Good nutrition is part of the care we give our cats every day. It starts with what goes into the bowl, but also includes fresh water, suitable portions and noticing when eating habits change.

A growing kitten and a cat aged seven or over have different needs. With a few thoughtful habits, you can build a feeding routine that supports your cat through each stage of life.

Start with a complete and balanced diet

Choose a complete and balanced cat food appropriate for your cat’s life stage. Growing kittens need food formulated for growth, while adult cats need a diet suited to their condition and activity.

Treats, toppers and supplementary milk can add variety, but should leave room for the main diet that provides your cat’s essential nutrition. Introduce new foods gradually so you can monitor how your cat responds.

Make fresh water part of every meal

Keep clean drinking water available throughout the day. Some cats prefer a wide bowl, while others enjoy a fountain—finding their preference can make drinking more inviting.

Wet food can also contribute to daily water intake. A prepared cat milk supplement offers another mealtime option, but fresh water should always remain available.

Feed growing kittens little and often

Kittens have plenty of growing to do, and their small meals need to support that development. Compared with adult cats, they generally need more food relative to their body weight and more frequent meals.

As a kitten grows, review portions and feeding frequency rather than keeping the same routine indefinitely. Very young, orphaned or unwell kittens need a feeding plan from a veterinarian, including an appropriate milk replacer when necessary.

GOLDENROO Premium Kitten Milk Formula is designed with growing kittens in mind. It combines quality dairy proteins with MCT, high-oleic sunflower oil, chicken fat and fish oil, alongside DHA, taurine, vitamins and minerals.

Made with low-lactose skim milk powder, it offers a nutrient-rich option for supplementary feeding when appropriate for your kitten. Follow the product’s preparation instructions and seek veterinary guidance before using it for a milk-dependent kitten.

Give mature cats individual attention

As cats grow older, their appetite, activity and body condition may change. Some need help avoiding excess weight, while others need closer attention to maintaining weight and muscle.

From age seven onward, make regular weight and body-condition checks part of your routine. Age alone does not determine the right diet: your cat’s health, eating habits and veterinary assessment matter too.

GOLDENROO Advanced Senior Cat Nutrition Formula 7+ is a supplementary milk formula developed for mature and senior cats aged seven and over.

Its blend of whey, hydrolysed chicken and hydrolysed fish proteins is designed to support lean muscle maintenance alongside a complete diet. MCT and chicken fat provide concentrated energy, while fish oil contributes EPA and DHA. The formula also includes taurine, L-carnitine, prebiotic fibres and yeast-derived nutrients for additional nutritional support.

Served as a freshly prepared milk drink, it can bring variety to an older cat’s routine. Account for its calories when planning daily portions, and ask your vet before adding it to a prescribed diet or feeding it to a cat with an existing medical condition.

Be thoughtful about milk

The familiar image of a cat enjoying a saucer of milk can be misleading. Many cats have difficulty digesting lactose, and ordinary milk may cause digestive upset.

The GOLDENROO kitten and 7+ formulas use low-lactose dairy ingredients, but individual tolerance still varies. Introduce them gradually, follow the feeding directions and monitor your cat’s digestion. Neither a milk treat nor a supplementary formula should displace the nutrition your cat needs from their main diet.

Keep portions—and preparation—consistent

Measure meals and extras rather than topping up the bowl without tracking the amount. Review portions as your cat’s weight, activity or appetite changes.

For powdered milk supplements, use a clean, dry scoop and prepare the formula according to the label. Never offer the powder dry. Prepare fresh whenever possible, keep feeding bowls clean and follow the product’s storage instructions.

Notice the small changes

A feeding routine is also a chance to observe your cat. Are they enjoying meals? Has their weight changed? Are they drinking more or leaving food behind?

If appetite, weight or thirst changes unexpectedly, contact your veterinarian. Adding a supplement should not delay an assessment.

From energetic kittenhood to life at seven and beyond, daily nutrition works best when it grows with your cat. A suitable main diet, fresh water and carefully chosen extras help make every meal a moment of care.
